Hales Owen History Society

The Halesowen History Society started life as the Halesowen Local History Group which was formed in 1975. The first members of the Group had made up the core of a local history course held at Halesowen College in the autumn of 1972 and formed the Halesowen Study Group which met from May 1973 until the change of name in 1975.

The Halesowen Local History Group became the Halesowen History Society in 1988.

The aims of the Society are:

  • to promote the study of the history of Halesowen and the surrounding area;
  • to promote an interest in local history among the general public through meetings, lectures, exhibitions etc;
  • and to encourage the preservation of records and evidences of the past for the enlightenment and enjoyment of future generations.

The Society holds public meetings in the Shenstone Theatre at Halesowen Central Library on the first Thursday of each month, September to June inclusive (except January). Meetings start at 7.30pm. Click here for details of our current programme. In addition a small group meets twice monthly in the Reference Library to pursue local history studies.

In recent years the Society’s members have undertaken a number of study projects including St Mary’s Abbey, the transcription and publication of parish registers and a survey of gravestones in St John’s Parish Church yard.
